Budwing Mantis (Parasphendale agrionina)

from $25.00

This is a fun mantis and good sized! As nymphs, they look like a normal brownish mantis but when they become adults, their underwings are a beautiful black color. In captivity, P. agrionina does well in warm conditions between 75–85°F (24–29°C) with moderate humidity levels around 50–60%. They require a sturdy, well-ventilated enclosure with vertical surfaces for climbing and molting. They are known for their strong appetite and aggressive hunting style, feeding readily on roaches and other live insects of appropriate size. Like many larger mantids, they are highly territorial and cannibalistic, so individual housing is essential. Their size, power, and no-nonsense attitude make them a popular species among keepers who enjoy bold and hardy mantises. Parasphendale agrionina, a larger and more robust relative of P. affinis. Native to East Africa, this species is a heavy-bodied mantis species, with females growing up to 2 inches or more. Females are flightless with short, rounded wings (the "budwings"), while males have longer wings and are capable of flight. These mantises are typically brown or mottled tan, allowing them to blend into dry, scrubby habitats.

The oothecae of this species is HUGE and looks like a giant puffball!
